- It is true, if it can fit in a container, it will be the cheapest method.
99% of all cargo is shipped in containers. So it makes sense that if you have a small trailer boat, and it can fit in a container, this will give you the best price. - I've heard that flat rack's are the way to ship, but why are they more expensive than a normal container?
Because of the cellular construction of the decks, whenever an items goes outside the standard container dimensions, it becomes what is known as OOG(out of gauge). Each measurement which is OOG, can cause the loss of slots next to, and above the location of your yacht. Even if in theory it was stowed at the top of the stack, it can still cause lost slots, due to the inability to lift other cargo off at ports which it may call at, prior to the discharge port of your boat. - Why does pricing boats take longer than just a normal container?
Calculating the cost to ship your boat on container vessels takes time to consult with many parties, including ship owners, captains, stevedores, foreign ports etc. There is not a set price or formulae, so requires pricing on a case by case basis. If you just need a estimate we can often give you this over the phone based on similar size boats we have shipped previously.
